Sunway Medical Centre Velocity Embarks On Major Expansion To Meet Growing Healthcare Demands

In response to Malaysia’s ageing population and the rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), Sunway Medical Centre Velocity (SMCV) has announced a multi-phase expansion aimed at enhancing its inpatient, emergency, and specialist services.

Since its opening in 2019, SMCV has grown rapidly to serve local and regional communities. Now, it is significantly upgrading its facilities to provide a more comprehensive and patient-centric healthcare experience.

“We are committed to continuous improvement,” said Susan Cheow, Chief Executive Officer of SMCV. “Beyond increasing capacity, this expansion integrates advanced medical care, accessibility, and holistic support to better serve our community.”

A key part of the expansion is the addition of a new medical ward located on the M Floor of Tower B, directly above the Accident & Emergency (A&E) department. With 18 new beds, this expansion increases SMCV’s total inpatient capacity to 247 beds. The ward has been thoughtfully designed with a contemporary and calming atmosphere to promote healing and patient comfort.

The move comes amid growing demand for chronic disease management and post-acute care, allowing SMCV to maintain high standards of personalised clinical services even as patient numbers rise.

SMCV’s A&E department is also undergoing a major upgrade to enhance critical care delivery and improve patient flow. The redesigned department will feature two separate entrances for easier access, an expanded registration area with more seating, and streamlined services all located on the same floor.

The upgraded emergency area will include three consultation rooms, 13 observation bays across green, yellow, and red zones, and a new Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) room to speed up diagnoses. Dr. Wee Tong Ming, Medical Director and Consultant Emergency Physician at SMCV, said the improvements will bolster the hospital’s ability to manage acute cases like strokes, heart attacks, and trauma efficiently, with the goal of reducing waiting times and improving patient outcomes.

Earlier this year, SMCV also marked a significant milestone with the opening of its new Tower A lobby and outpatient departments. The thoughtfully designed lobby provides dual access from the main road and a scenic garden, and includes a food and beverage outlet to enhance visitor convenience.

The new Tower A houses 92 consultation suites and a newly launched Health Screening Centre (HSC) on Level 2. This HSC serves as a fully integrated one-stop screening facility, with all diagnostic services such as X-rays and mammograms conveniently located on the same floor, reducing patient movement across the building.

Looking ahead, SMCV plans to transform Tower A into a 22-storey integrated medical facility. The lower ten floors will be dedicated to expanding clinical services — including additional consultation suites, inpatient wards, operating theatres, and intensive care units — while the upper twelve floors will focus on non-clinical services such as wellness, lifestyle offerings, and post-hospitalisation care.

Through these strategic expansions, SMCV is setting itself up to meet future healthcare needs with a strong emphasis on holistic, patient-centred care.
