Mastercard has announced a major leadership shift in its Asia Pacific operations, with long-serving President Ari Sarker set to step down at the end of this year after more than a decade at the helm.
Sarker, who has overseen Mastercard’s rapid growth and strengthened its partnerships across the region, will transition into an advisory role from January 2026. In this capacity, he will focus on strategic initiatives and mentor regional leadership to ensure a smooth handover.
“Ari’s influence across the region has been profound,” said Ling Hai, President, Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Mastercard. “He’s championed innovation and inclusion, and built deep relationships with governments, fintechs, and enterprises. We’re grateful for his contributions and pleased he’ll continue to support the business in an advisory role.”
Effective January 1, 2026, Richard “Rich” Wormald, currently Division President for Australasia, will succeed Sarker as President of Asia Pacific. Wormald, who has led Mastercard’s operations in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, is credited with driving innovation and performance in the region.
Reflecting on his time at Mastercard, Sarker said, “It’s been an incredible journey leading Mastercard in Asia Pacific. I’m proud of what we’ve built together and grateful to the teams, partners, and customers who’ve made it all possible. Rich is a trusted colleague and a thoughtful leader – I’m confident he’ll continue to move the business forward with purpose and care.”
Wormald expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, adding, “Asia Pacific is a dynamic and diverse region, and I look forward to working with our teams and partners to keep growing and delivering meaningful impact.”
As part of the leadership reshuffle, Mastercard also announced that Paul Monnington will join the company in January 2026 as Division President, Australasia, succeeding Wormald. Monnington, who previously led Woolworths’ Wpay business and held senior roles at Woolworths Group and National Australia Bank, will oversee operations across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
“I’m excited to be joining Mastercard at such a pivotal time,” Monnington said. “The company’s focus on innovation, inclusion, and customer partnership really resonates with me, and I look forward to contributing to its continued success in Australasia.”
Mastercard said Sarker and Wormald will work closely together over the coming months to engage with stakeholders and ensure a seamless transition.
The leadership changes highlight Mastercard’s continued investment in strengthening its regional leadership bench, with the company emphasizing its focus on innovation, inclusivity, and partnership as it looks to accelerate growth across one of the world’s most diverse markets.
