Malaysia Digital Economy Accelerates With RM16.2 Billion In Investments, 6,480 Jobs Expected

Malaysia’s digital economy continues to chart strong growth, with RM16.2 billion in approved investments under the Malaysia Digital (MD) initiative between January and April 2025. The announcement was made during the official launch of the Ministry of Digital’s Northern Regional Office, underscoring the sector’s role as a key engine of national growth, innovation, and job creation.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo highlighted that the surge in digital investments is projected to generate 6,480 job opportunities, further positioning Malaysia as a leading digital hub in the region.

“These new opportunities are set to provide more gainful employment for Malaysians while nurturing a new generation of innovators and digital talent to drive our nation’s future growth,” said Gobind in his speech.

A total of 148 companies were awarded MD status during the four-month period. Artificial Intelligence (AI) companies led the pack, making up 27% of the total, followed by the Data Centres & Cloud subsectors (23%) and Global Business Services (11.5%).

Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) CEO Anuar Fariz Fadzil attributed the investment momentum to Malaysia’s robust digital ecosystem.

“This strong investment momentum reflects the trust global investors place in Malaysia’s digital ecosystem. With world-class infrastructure, competitive talent and progressive policies under Malaysia Digital, we are going beyond building capabilities to nurture a national culture of innovation,” he said.

To mark the launch of the Northern Regional Office, MDEC also hosted the Malaysia Digital (MD) Open Day — an event aimed at showcasing key digital initiatives, enabling dialogue on talent and innovation, and fostering public-private partnerships. The event is part of the government’s broader strategy to empower regions and align nationwide digital goals.

During the event, MDEC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Digital Penang to promote the adoption of advanced digital technologies such as Big Data, AI, Web3, cybersecurity, and blockchain. The collaboration also aims to support talent development, mentorship, funding access, and global market connectivity for startups and SMEs in the northern region.

“As we expand Malaysia Digital’s footprint, we remain focused on ensuring that no state or community is left behind in our digital transformation journey,” said MDEC Chairman Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh.

The MD Open Day was also attended by Penang’s Deputy Chief Minister II, YB Jagdeep Singh Deo A/L Karpal Singh; Infrastructure, Transport, and Digital EXCO YB Tuan Zairil Khir Johari; and other key industry players from the digital ecosystem.
