Amazon Web Services Announces RM25.5 Billion Investment into Malaysia

Through Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation’s (MDEC) deep support and continued facilitation to drive data centre investments in Malaysia, Amazon Web Services (AWS), an Amazon.com, Inc. company (NASDAQ:AMZN), has announced plans to launch an AWS Region in Malaysia.

This represents the first AWS Region in Malaysia. The new AWS Region will consist of three Availability Zones at launch, with a planned total investment value of RM25.5 billion by 2037.

The Availability Zones place infrastructure in separate and distinct geographic locations, with enough distance to significantly reduce the risk of a single event impacting customers’ business continuity, yet near enough to provide low latency for high availability applications that use multiple Availability Zones.

The Minister of Communications and Digital, YB Fahmi Fadzil, said, “Today marks a momentous milestone for Malaysia as AWS announces plans for its first infrastructure region here. This affirms the confidence of global investors in our digital economy ecosystem.

“The AWS Region will be a vital component that forms the backbone of our digital economy, providing reliable, secure, and scalable platform to businesses, governments, and enterprises, enabling greater agility and faster innovation.”

As the lead digital Investment Promotion Agency (IPA) of the nation, MDEC has worked closely with AWS to ensure a successful investment.

Ts. Mahadhir Aziz, CEO of MDEC, said, “We look forward to our continued collaboration with AWS in Malaysia to advance our Malaysia Digital national strategic initiative. With today’s milestone announcement, we also affirm our commitment towards further facilitating global investors to land and expand from the nation.”

The AWS Region in Malaysia will provide a broad and deep portfolio of services, including analytics, compute, database, Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning, mobile services, storage, and other cloud technologies for Malaysia organisations.
